Facts and Important Information About Shingles
The first symptoms of shingles (zoster) are usually pain,
burning, and discomfort in the area of nerve distribution. This
can vary from mild to severe and generally precedes the eruption
by several days. The rash is usually seen as a bandlike eruption
on one side of the body. Redness is first seen in the area
followed by bumps that rapidly become water blisters that become
pus filled. Persistent, severe pain after the rash has subsided,
called postherpetic neuralgia, occurs in 10% to 15% of cases and
is common in the elderly. This pain can persist for months,
sometimes years, after the shingles rash has healed.
Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the
same virus that causes chickenpox.
The virus lies dormant in the nerve tissue. As we get older,
(usually over 50) the virus may reappear in the form of
shingles.
Shingles is estimated to affect 2 in every 10 people in their
lifetime.
500,000 people will develop shingles this year.
It has been found that Shingles are more common in people with
weakened immune systems from HIV infection, chemotherapy or
radiation treatment, transplant operations, and stress.
It is possible for you to spread the virus to people who have
never had chickenpox (if they touch the rash of someone who has
a shingles outbreak).
The Rash, Blisters, or lesions become present anywhere from 1 to
14 days.
If shingles appear on your face, it can lead to complications in
your hearing.
If you have shingles around your eyes, the cornea can become
infected and lead to temporary or permanent blindness.
There is no cure for shingles, but the severity and duration of
an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced if it is
treated immediately.
