What you should know About
VALTREX*
Valtrex (generic: valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug used in
the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), herpes simplex II
(genital herpes), and herpes simplex I (cold sores).
If taking VALTREX for cold sores, genital herpes, or shingles;
it is important that you do not exceed your doctors prescribe
dosage.
There are no studies that show if VALTREX works when used after
the appearance of a lesion, such as bumps, blisters, or sores.
VALTREX is not a cure for the herpes virus. Even with treatment,
it may be possible to spread cold sores, herpes, or shingles to
others. VALTREX is intended for healthy adults only.
Valtrex may cause nervous system problems including: aggressive
behavior, shaky movements, confusion, speech problems,
hallucinations, seizures, and coma.
Valtrex may cause kidney problems in some people.
If your immune system is not normal because of advanced HIV
disease, bone marrow or kidney transplant, tell your doctor to
avoid a potentially serious complication.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or blood disorders -
You may need a lower dose or special monitoring of your
medication.
Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor
if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether valacyclovir passes into breast milk and
how it may affect a nursing baby. Do not take this medication
without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a
baby.
Stop taking valacyclovir and seek emergency medical attention if
you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing;
closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or
hives).
Other valtrex side effects may include headache, dizziness,
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, tremors, or abdominal
pain.
Probenecid (Benemid) and cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB) may
increase the effects of Valtrex and possibly lead to dangerous
side effects. You may need a dosage adjustment or special
monitoring during treatment if you are taking probenecid or
cimetidine.
If you are taking other medications they may also interact with
Valtrex, be sure to talk to your doctor and pharmacist - this
includes any prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, and
herbal products.
Keep this and all other medicines out of the reach of children!
